South Africa’s Brenden Pappas victorious after two rounds at Bogota Open of Nationwide Tour
The Pacific Rubiales Bogota Open of Nationwide Tour finally ended yesterday with weather being the main factor as only 36 holes were played over four days. It was the South African Brenden Pappas who took advantage of the moist course conditions and carded
a superb second round of five-under par, 66 to lift the championship trophy.
The weather was really dreadful on all the four days as the tournament committee decided to shorten the tournament to only 36 holes. American Matt Every had to be content with the second position with a two round score of eight-under par, 134.
South African Pappas had an impressive score of five-under par, 66 for the second round which was enough for him to capture the title. Pappas had an eagle, six birdies and three bogeys on his card. The only eagle came on the par-5, 13th where
he muscled his approach shot to the green which landed 12-feet inside the hole. He then went on the make the only eagle for the two rounds he played. The three drop shots came on hole number 2, 5 and the finishing 18th. Pappas took full advantage
of the soft greens and was controlling the spin of the ball. This win had to be an unofficial Nationwide Tour victory for him, as the tournament was reduced to only 36 holes. He had a total two round aggregate score of nine-under par, 133.
American Every, had a rather moderate second round of four-under par, 67 and was second on the leader board after the tournament finished. Matt had an eagle, five birdies followed up by three bogeys for his second round. His only eagle came on the finishing
par-5, 18th where he was lucky, as his third shot directly landed in the hole. The youngster was rather pleased with the way he played in two rounds and his total two-round aggregate score was eight-under par, 134.
There was a five-way tie for the third slot. Julian Etulain of Argentina, American Clayton Rask, Won Joon Lee of Australia, Scott Brown of USA and Colombian David Vanegas all had the similar two round score of 7-under par, 135.
Brown was the only player among the five who carded a bogey-free second round of five-under par, 66. He had five birdies marked on his card and played flawless golf, as he could have improved his position on the finishing par-5, 18th where he
missed a short birdie putt.
This was the first time that the Nationwide Tour had a setback of a 36 hole tournament. The tournament committee was challenged by nature, but they still managed to squeeze two rounds of play on the four days. Pappas at the end captured the winner’s cheque
of $108,000 and the trophy.
