South Africa's Herschelle Gibbs to appear as commentator in 2011 Cricket World Cup
Fans of former South African opener Herschelle Gibbs may still be able to see their favourite player in action during the 2011 World Cup, but this time in a slightly different role – that is, as a commentator.
Gibbs’ agent, Donne Commins, revealed that the controversial cricketer was in talks with several international broadcasting companies, including an Indian sports channel, for a possible commentating stint. The Afrikaans daily Beeld
quoted Commins as saying that Gibbs had received several offers and was busy weighing them up against his desire to play for the provincial side, the http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Cape-Cobras-c776, in the upcoming Pro20 series.
Just last week, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/South-Africa-c757 (CSA) arrived at a mutual decision to part ways, following the publication of a controversial book by the batsman in which he discussed matters of s*x, drugs and alcohol in connection
with the South African team. Gibbs may face legal action from former team-mates and CSA for the nature of the revelations in his book.
“It will be strange to see Gibbs as a commentator,” wrote Altus Momberg, a columnist at the Beeld. “His bat has done the talking in the past, but after he showed a willingness to reveal secrets in his autobiography, it’s probably
believed that he could provide entertaining commentary.”
Of course, if Gibbs chooses to play in the Pro20 series (for which he has already been given the go-ahead by CSA), he will be unable to take up a commentating job during the World Cup. The series will runs from February 19th
to April 2nd, 2010, and will clash with the first half of the World Cup.
Andre Odendaal, the chief executive of the Cape Cobras, said that he was to meet with Gibbs to personally discuss the matter with him “as soon as possible to find out exactly what his situation is.”
