South Africa’s assistant coach, Gary Gold, has expressed his interest in the head coach role of the country’s national Rugby Union team. South African national Rugby Union team, commonly known
as Springboks, current head coach Peter de Villiers' contract with South African Rugby Union (SARU) will expire on December 31, 2011.
Gold made these comments while talking to IOL on Monday, November 14. He said, “I would deem it an honour to be considered along with the other candidates who are being spoken of as possible
Bok coaches.”
Gold has served under Peter de Villiers as the forwards coach for the last four years. Previously he has been involved with South African provincial Rugby Union side, Western Province and Aviva
Premiership outfit, London Irish in different coaching roles.
Gold expressed his confidence that he has the personality attributes, skills, expertise and abilities to perform in the role of the Springboks head coach. He added, “I don't feel I am entitled
to anything, but obviously when you have been involved as I have you learn a lot, and I believe that I have accumulated enough intellectual capital while assistant coach to qualify for the job should the powers-that-be deem me to be a suitable candidate.”
Gold added that he is looking forward to the selection criteria SARU will use for the selection of the next head coach. He added that he is aware that he will not meet all the points of the
selection criteria. However, he terms his experience and continuity in the coaching roles as an advantage over the other candidates.
Speaking on the occasion, Gold has expressed his satisfaction with his performance as Springboks forward coach. He termed the South African Rugby Union talent as special and expressed his confidence
that the available players have the capability to achieve 85% success rate. He expressed his disappointment that SARU does not offer a lot of time to coaches to work with players and gel them into a team.
Gary Gold further added that the challenge faced by South African Rugby is to manage the players and utilise their strengths to deliver optimal performances.
