My brother and i are planning a trip to South America. We are thinking either Peru, Bolivia, Colombia, and maybe even Mexico and Argentina. We probably wouldnt see them all but they are on our short list. We are thinking 3 weeks on that continent and would like some sort of experienced advise on what others would do. We do love to have a good time, so a fe beers and partying nights mixed with cultured days would be nice. Please help???

  1. If you haven't already, watch "motorcycle diarys".  I'm not going to give it all away, but it is about two travelers going from Buenos Aires to Venuzuela pretty much all by motorcycle.  It came out a few years ago so now it is on dvd.  One of the characters was to become pretty famous later on.  Takes place some time around the 50's.  It is well worth your time.

For party places I wouldn't miss Buenos Aires.  Mexico isn't part of South America, but you can have some good times there too.

  2. if you want a crazy party, chicks and good music go to  Bogota (north, park of the 93 street) in colombia and Buenos aires in argentina

santiago in chile can be fun too and Montevideo in Uruguay

  3. I have been traveling for years in Mexico,Central &South America.Three weeks is 'barely enough' for one country. They are all good choices though.

For just 3 weeks I would begin by looking for the least expensive R/T airfare to each of the destinations you are considering.Don't bother with any of the all-inclusive junk,it wont save you any money, just the 'cheapest airfare' as that will be your major cost for the trip.Traveling with your brother is also a plus, as you will save time and money by needing ony one room.

If this is your first trip to a Spanish speaking country I think Mexico would be a great first choice...and can be done on a budget, even the "hot spots" regardless of what one of the other poster here says.Budget US$50 per day each for 'ground' travel (Hotel,Food,Transportation and misc. fees)  You should be able to do it for less than that but it's a good round number to use for planning how long you will be able to travel. If you need any help planning an itinerary or have any other questions or concerns feel free to email me.

    Buena suerte y buen viaje!

  4. I live about 50 miles from Mexico and its a bit overrated and if you go to the hot spots it will cost you a fortune.

Ive been to Bogota and it was a lot of fun and it is generally save if you have your head on tight. Go to 93 street and the Zona Rosas for some good fun and you cant really get away from the wonderful culture

  5. Okay the best place to go is to Colombia. I was there 2 weeks ago, and I enjoyed myself. I do not know if you want to go to the coast where you can enjoy the beach or inland. I have never been to the coast, but inland is fun, make sure to walk with a sweater because it does get cold in certain parts, mostly in the mountain and most of the country is composed of them.

I suggest the following cities: Bogota and Bucaramanga. Cities to avoid: Cali and Cucuta.

Other good cities: Medellin, Santa Marta, Baranquilla, Cartagena.

Make sure if you do not already, learn some Spanish, you will need it because once you are outside of the Airport you will not likely be able to find English speakers. I suggest you buy a pocket dictornary.

Also try the beer called "Aguila" it is popular there!

Go to the mall, it is extremely cheap, well everything is cheap in Colombia. $1US = about 2,000 pesos.

Go to the clubs, they are free to get in. Hotels can be both cheap and expensive, the cheap ones usually have bad quality, sometimes comes with roaches so look out!

Be safe and try to make some Colombian friends, they are very friendly people, they well help you get around. Also do not roam around the city unless you know where you are going, and do not try to look like a tourist, act like a Colombian. Change all your dollars into pesos, and do not dress like a tourist, do not use expensive devices in public such as the latest cell phone, ipod, etc...

Hope you choose Colombia and enjoy.
