Chennai’s South Central Railway (SCR) emerged victorious over Kapurthala’s Rail Coach Factory (RCF) by three goals, 4-1 in the quarter-finals of the 2011 DCB Aga Khan Hockey Cup that took place at the Bombay Gymkhana Club this week.
K. K. Bharat was the real architect of the triumph who scored two goals and made the victory possible. Among the other scorers, Poonacha and N. Ramesh were the other two names. These two scored one goal each in the win. From the other side, Gurvinder Singh
was the person who notched the solitary goal.
The teams started the game quite offensively, but it was South Central Railway that drew the first blood in the seventh minute of the match. Poonacha managed to take the ball inside the circle and passed the ball to K. K. Bharat, who made no mistake, sent
the drag flick into the RCF goal-posy and opened the score at 1-0.
However, the strikers from the other side were not sitting silently and watching the game go by. In the 15th minute of the game, Gurvinder Singh unleashed a powerful drag flick and had it all even at 1-1. P Fokrelo, the goalie of the SCR had no
chance to block the ball.
However, after the tie-up, the SCR players adopted more offensive strategies and chipped in a couple of goals in a very short span of time. N. Ramesh, the skipper of the SCR converted a short corner in the 27th minute of the game to put his side
ahead on the score-board. In the very next minute, Pooncha struck another shot through the RCF's goalie and expanded the lead of up to two goals. The two teams moved into the second half of play with SCR sitting on top at 3-1.
In the second half of play, the Chennai’s SCR continued to dominate the field with the ball possession and continued the back-to-back strikes. In the 56thminute of the game, Bharat managed to get into the RCF defensive circle and stretch the lead
up to three goals, 4-3. Both teams carried out numerous attacks, but to no avail. After an end-to-end play in the remaining time period, South Central Railway won the game and moved into the semi-finals of the DCB Aga Khan Cup.
In another match, Bombay Engineering Group (BEG) hailing from Pune trounced Rashtriya Chemicals by three goals, 5-3. It was quite one-sided contest, as the BEG players did not allow the opponents to establish their grip over the game. Ajay Kujur scored two
goals while his team-mates, Samsulender, Amol Bhosle and Rohit Dungdung, accounted for a single goal, respectively. From the other side, Mahesh Bagade and Suhas Patil scored one goal apiece in the loss.
