South Kingstown losses to Bishop Hendricken 3-1 in Division I boys volleyball championship final
The Bishop Hendricken boys volleyball team was able to hand out a defeat to South Kingstown in the Finals with a score of 3-1. By bagging themselves the win, the Hawks have been able to earn themselves the title of Division I boys’ volleyball champions yet
again.
By the time that the number one seeded Hawks had won, the final set scores stood at 23-25, 25-20, 25-19 and 25-13. The Hawks have ended the championship with a total of 16 victories under their belt while they have not incurred even a single loss. On the
other hand, the number two ranked South Kingstown team have had 14 wins at the cost of suffering two losses.
The head coach of the Rebels, Jackie Fagan, commented after the match, “I don’t think we had anything to lose. We finished in second, which is where we’ve been all year. They (Hendricken) are the only team that beat us. That’s not bad. There is no other
team in the state that could beat South Kingstown.”
The start of the first set of the game went in favour of South Kingstown who were able to take the lead early on at 14-9. The Hawks did not let the Rebels go much further and were able to tie the score, but before the Hawks could overtake, the Rebels put
on a spurt of speed that got them the lead again. The Hawks were able to bring the score to a tie three times but not once could they overtake the Rebels. As a result, the first set of the match was won by the Rebels at 25-23.
Capitalising on the win in the opening set of the game, the Rebels were able to come out strong in the second as well. The Rebels got themselves the lead at 14-12 at which point the Hawks saw it fit to break their momentum and take a timeout. The strategy
worked and the Hawks came out as a rejuvenated team. On the other hand, the Rebels experienced a downfall in their game and let the Hawks take a leading position at 24-17. Once they got to this point, it was only a matter of time before the Hawks bagged the
second set of the game at 25-20.
The Hawks were able to take the lead early in the third set at 7-6. The Rebels were not able to stop their rivals from extending their advantage and come into a dominating position. The Hawks went on to win the third set of the game at 25-19. The Hawks also
won the fourth and the final set at 25-13.
