South Korea, Singapore strike golds in Asiad bowling trios
South Korea and Singapore ruled the men's and women's trios events, respectively, in the 2010 Asian Games bowling competition on Saturday.
Choi Bok-eum, Choi Yong-kyu and Jang Dong-chul scored 2008 pinfalls in the second block of the men’s trios event at the Tianhe Bowling Hall for a 4061 total.
The trio sustained their fiery form after topping yesterday's first block with a score of 2053. Choi Yong-kyu was the top performer in the second three-game block, downing 697 pins. Choi Bok-eum scored 691, while Jang tallied a 620.
They finished ahead of South Korea 1, which posted a 3952 final tally. Hong Hae-sol bowled a 711 while Cho Young-seon and Suh Sang-cheon submitted a 625 and 632, respectively.
Qatar, represented by Fahad Alemadi, Mansour Al Hajri and Mubarak Al Muraikhi, took bronze with a final score of 3908.
The South Korean women failed to duplicate the feat of their male counterparts as they were unable to sustain their momentum in the second block. Erstwhile, leaders Choi Jin-a, Hwang Sun-ok and Son Jun-hee managed only 1798 in the second block for a 3849
output.
In contrast, Singaporeans Shayna Ng, Geraldine Ng and Cherie Tan posted an outstanding performance to win the gold. They combined for 1906 pinfalls for a six-game total of 3917.
Tan scored 665 pinfalls while Geraldine and Shayna registered 656 and 585, respectively.
The trio won Singapore's second gold medal in the Guangzhou meet following swimmer Tao Li's victory in the women's 50m butterfly on Thursday. Singaporean bowlers have also won two silvers and a bronze.
Shayna won a silver in the singles on Tuesday while Remy Ong and Jason Yeong Nathan finished second in the men’s doubles the next day. Singapore’s lone bronze was won by h*i Fen New in the women’s singles.
China's Yang Suling, Chen Dongdong and Zhang Yuhong placed third with a 3841 final tally. It was a remarkable achievement for the Chinese, who were ranked only fifth after the first block. Zhang made 640 pinfalls, Yang scored a 636 while Chen tallied a
590.
South Korea leads the overall medal tally with three golds and three silvers. Singapore is in second spot while the Philippines is in third place with a gold and a bronze to show.
Malaysia has one gold courtesy of Adrian Hsien Loong and Kien Liang Liew in the men’s doubles. Other countries that made it to the medal table so far were Kuwait, Japan, China and Qatar.
The bowling competition will resume tomorrow with the first block in the men’s and women’s team of five events to be contested.
