South Korea earns a spot in the Thomas Cup Finals – Badminton news
South Korea ensures his presence in the Thomas Cup finals by defeating Chinese Taipei, Thailand and India in playoff round of Thomas and Uber Cup preliminaries in Macau.
Korea, after losing quarter-final against Indonesia, had to play much criticised playoff round to earn its spot in the Thomas Cup finals, to be held in Wuhan, China. The Korean shuttlers were needed to exhibit their prime skills to win all three matches
and they have successfully hit the mark.
After pounding Chinese Taipei and Thailand the Koreans ruled the court against India yesterday also. But the Indians put a great resistance and did not permit the Korea to seal the victory with ease.
The seasoned Indian shuttler Parupalli Kashyap stunned his Korean rival World Number eight Lee Hyun Il and bagged the first match point by blowing away Lee Hyun in the opening singles game with score cards showing final score of 21-18 and 21-17.
The Korea bounced back with the superlative degree performance of its duo Lee Yong Dae-Ko Sung Hyun as they thrashed the Indian couple Akshay Dewalkar-Pranav Chopra in just 25 minutes. The Indians were no comparison to the Koreans as they were hammered by
them with a distinctive margin of 21-12 and 21-10.
The Korea’s second singles player Shon Wan Ho, who currently is ranked 19 in the world rankings, took the lead to 2-1 by making his Indian challenger Sourabh Varma surrender in next encounter.
It took one hour and fourteen minutes to end the tussle as the Indian put a great fight but in this nerve-racking encounter the Korean registered a final score of 21-8, 19-21 and 21-19 on the board and turned Indian plans into dust.
The second doubles game was last nail in the coffin when the Korean shuttlers Yeong Seong Yoo- Shin Baek-Choel buried their rival couple Sanave Thomas- Diju V. They clinched the game and match jointly with a decisive score of 21-11 and 21-11.
After winning three consequential match points, Korea decided to quit and did not give young Indian shuttler B.Sai Praneeth a chance to play even a single shot in the last singles game.
That concluded Korea’s 3-2 victory over India and rightly deserved Korea paved its path to Thomas Cup finals, going to be held in China from May 20-27.
