South Korea stuns Brazil with 3-0 victory at the Olympics – Volleyball News
With 21 points from Kim Yeon-Koung, which were scored only on spikes, South Korea downed Brazil at the Earls Court on Wednesday.
Koreans proved to be better in every aspect of the game and stamped a 3-0 (25-23, 25-21, 25-21) victory over Brazil in front of 11,000 spectators. Korea moved to 2-1 in the 2012 London Olympic women’s volleyball tournament by scoring this particular win against Brazil. However, the loss shifted Brazil to 1-2 in the competition.
Kim Yeon-Koung demonstrated a stellar feat and devastated the Brazilian defence. She contributed the highest scores in the match (21) and received huge applause from the international audience. Han Song-Yi of Korea also performed amazingly well and ended with 21 points. On the other hand, Sheilla Castro fought for Brazil and finished with 16 points. She was followed by Fabiana Claudino and Fernanda Rodrigues, who scored 10 points apiece.
The tussle started out in the first set when both teams came into contest. Brazil attacked through the trio of Sheilla Castro, Thaisa Menezes and Fabiana Claudino, which helped the team to take an early lead. Korea hit back and managed to catch up with the rival side at 12-all. Thereafter, the game of hit ‘n’ run gave many different flavours to match. The audience moved back and forth in their seats and enjoyed the thrilling action of volleyball. Eventually, the opening stanza ended with the final score of 25-23 and Korea went on front (1-0).
Second set of the match was also tight. The score remained close until Korea paced things with heavy strike of volleys after the second technical timeout. Brazil trailed behind and lost second set with a deficit of four points (25-21).
In the third set, Korea repeated the same act and clinched success by sending the identical score of 25-21 on board. South Korea won the match and marked its first win over Brazil since 2003 FIVB World Grand Prix.
Winning South Korean Captain Kim Yeon-Koung, who was not satisfied with her own performance in the match, said: “I am not in great condition, but the other players are in great shape, so we played really well. That was the best game for Korea and we will try to play like this every time. I really don't think much about that. Today was my lowest production and we still won, so the most important thing is to take the victory and hopefully get one of the medals.”
Brazil’s Fernanda Rodrigues acknowledged the great effort of Korean players. She complimented them in the following manner: “They (Korea) played well. They didn't let us play our game, they attacked well. We did not have our best match today.
In the next match on Friday, South Korea will clash with Turkey. Likewise, Brazil is scheduled to meet China.
