South Korea sweeps golf events in Asian Games
South Korea lived up to its top billing as it took all four gold medals at stake in the 2010 Asian Games golf competition on Saturday.
Kim Meen-whee and Kim Hyun-soo topped the men's and women's individual events and led their team-mates to victories in the team events.
Kim Meen-whee maintained his impressive form at the Dragon Lake Club, closing out his campaign with a 3-under-par 69 for a 15-under-273 final tally. He drilled five birdies to make up for two bogeys.
The 18-year-old, who had a six-stroke lead heading into the final 18 holes, opened with back-to-back birdies before settling for a bogey on the par-4 sixth. He made birdies on the 13th, 14th and 15th holes before dropping a shot on his final hole.
Miguel Tabuena of the Philippines closed out with a 72 for a 282 to settle for the silver. The 16-year-old Filipino led in the first and second rounds before being overtaken by Kim Meen-whee yesterday.
Hung Chien Yao of Chinese Taipei pocketed the bronze after closing out with a 69 for a 283.
Bunched in fourth spot at 285 were Thailand's Attachai Jaichalad (74), India's Rashid Khan (72) and South Korean Lee Kyoung-hoon (71).
In the team event, South Korea finished with a 218 for an 842 to formalise its victory. Joining Kim Meen-whee and Lee Kyoung-hoon in the squad are Park Il-hwan and Lee Jae-hyeok.
India, represented by Khan, Rahul Bajaj, Abhinav Lohan and Chadha Abhijit Singh, salvaged a silver with an 874 final tally.
Chinese Taipei, which is made up of Hung, Huang Tao, Yang Fei Hao and Hsieh Chi Hsien, took the bronze with a final score of 875.
Like her male counterpart, Kim Hyun-soo emerged as the runaway leader in the women's event. She concluded her campaign with a 72 for a 277, 10 strokes clear of team-mate Kim Ji-hee (70) and China's Yan Jing (69).
Kim Ji-hee and Yan battled each other in a play-off for the silver and the latter emerged victorious with a decisive putt on the 17th.
South Korea's Han Jung-eun (76) and Thailand's Miss Ariya Jutanugarn (67) finished in tied fourth with 289s.
Kim Hyun-soo, Kim Ji-hee and Han easily won the team event with a 560. China (571) settled for the silver while Chinese Taipei (585) claimed the gold.
Yan, Li Jiayun and Lin Xiyu were the members of the Chinese squad while Yao Hsuan Yu, Hsu Ke h*i and Liu Yi Chen made up the Taiwanese team.
