South Korea thrash Black Sticks women by 5-3 in 2011 Rabo FIH Champions Trophy
The third match on the day four in the 2011 Rabo FIH women’s Champions Trophy concluded at Wagner Stadium, in Amsterdam, Netherland where South Korea outclassed New Zealand by 5-3 in a very entertaining game on June 30.
Both the teams had qualified for the Pool C along with Argentina and Netherlands by dint of their brilliant performance throughout the preliminary round matches. In Pool C the teams will play for the winning-podium, for the medals.
The game was quite entertaining as the Korean women entertained the spectators very well throughout the match, especially during the second half. The Korean women were pretty astonishing throughout the match by scoring five goals in total. Their three goals
out of the total five came in the second half. The Black Sticks too showed some great performance, but the Koreans were matchless in every aspect of the game. The match was at level in the first half. Both the teams scored a two goals each, but in the second
half it was all about South Koreans.
The victory was Korea’s first win over the Kiwis since February 2008 in which they had defeated the Black Sticks women by 4-0.
Seven of the total eight goals were scored on open play in this match which stands to second, the match between Netherlands and Germany in 2005 in which eight goals were scored on open play and the match was won by the Dutch women by 8-1.
Kim Jong Hee was the star performer of the day for the South Koreans as she destroyed the Kiwis’ defence on three occasions. She scored a wonderful hat-trick for the South Koreans that had a major contribution in the crucial win.
If Black Sticks have to make it to the next round, they would need to beat Argentina by four or more goals.
"We are still a chance for the final,'' said Hager, "but it's a tough ask to beat the world No 1, and Holland would have to beat Korea. "If you score three goals at this level you shouldn't concede five to a team ranked a place behind you. That was the disappointing
thing.
"We probably had an even amount of chances too but they put theirs away and we didn't,'' said Hager.
Hager said the Black Sticks were not in their true fervour against Korea, which was the main reason for their defeat.
