South Korea trounce Great Britain, 3-1 in 20th Sultan Azlan Shah Hockey Cup: Hockey News
After giving unimpressive performances in the last three games, South Korea humiliated the Great Britain team by 3-1 in their last group contest of the 20th Sultan Azlan Shah Cup, held at the Sultan Azlan Shah Hockey Stadium, in Ipoh, Malaysia,
on May 14.
The contest went head-to-head in the first few minutes, but it was South Korea that drew the first blood in the 9th minute of the game. Yoon Sung Hoon opened the scoring for South Korea by getting a goal from the field.
After conceding one goal, the British team started a more aggressive game, but to no avail. Many of their strikes were denied by the Korean defenders. The contest build up intensity in the 20th minute of the game, when Great Britain earned a short
corner and this time Matthew Daley had it all even at one-all. In the 24th minute of the game, Jeon Byung Jin chipped in another goal for Korea regaining the lead, 2-1. Following a hardly-fought game, the first half of play was concluded with Koreans
hanging on to a single goal advantage, 2-1.
James Tindall in the very early minutes of the second half carried out an attack, but to no avail, as the ball was denied by Le Seung, the skipper of the South Korea.
The Korean side obtained another short-corner in the 40th minute of the game, this time attempted by You Hyo Sik, who doubled Korea’s lead to 3-1 in the 41st minute.
In the 43rd minute of the game, James Tindall once again got into the Korean defensive circle and unleashed a low flying shot. However, the Korean skipper made a dive to clear the ball with a full stick.
The remaining game was filled with attacks and counter-attacks, as one side wanted to reduce the lead while other wanted to hold back the advantage.
South Korea earned a pair of penalty corners in the 54th and 55th minutes respectively, but failed to make any addition to the score
In the last 15 minutes, the British side carried out loads of strikes into the Korean’s 25-yard line, but those were deflected by the Korean defensemen and goal-keeper. As the final whistle sounded, South Korea won the game by two goals, 3-1.
