South Korean Ryu finishes tied for 2nd at Royal Melbourne
So Yeon Ryu was more than excited on the last day of Women’s Australian Open at Royal Melbourne, as she finished tied for 2nd.
South Korean Ryu played amazingly well right from the start of the tournament and managed to gain a lead on Friday, by scoring an impressive 4-under 69.
She stood to her ground, keeping the nearest rival Hee Kyung Seo one stroke behind.
Ryu, who had previously beaten Hee at the Broadmoor in Colorado Springs, was not surprised when she maintained the upper hand in the 2nd round. However, Hee forged ahead and finished tied for 2nd.
Ryu was confident enough to take the lead to the next rounds and win the Women’s Australian Open.
However, a few lapses on some holes hampered her from surging ahead and she saw American Jessica Korda snatch the top spot.
Ryu’s score in the first two rounds was phenomenal. She started the round 2 with plenty of confidence and drained her first birdie on the 5th hole.
Parring the next two holes, Ryu knew the only way to move ahead was to avoid bogeys.
The round was almost flawless, as she bogeyed only two holes. She appeared to be in high spirits when she reeled off two consecutive birdies on the difficult par-3 and par-4 holes.
Although thrilled by a decent score in the 2nd round, Ryu faltered a little in the 3rd and 4th rounds, letting other players to surge ahead.
She started the 3rd day in an impressive style, birdying the par-5 2nd and par-3 3rd holes.
Ryu had to contend with plenty of challenge. Her putting was average but a few careless strokes resulted in a string of bogeys. She made 6 bogeys and finished the 3rd round 3-over 76.
Although she tried her best to bounce back in the final round, her score was not good enough to stop Jessica Korda from romping to the top. Her score was a 73.
She said that the course of Royal Melbourne proved challenging for her, despite which she made some good putts.
"I know it is not an easy course so I was nervous," Ryu said.
Sharing her thoughts about losing the top position, Ryu said she did her best to hold on to the lead but some minor mistakes took a toll on her overall score.
