South Korean riders sweep road time trials in Asiad
South Korea took the first two gold medals at stake in the 2010 Asian Games road cycling competition on Saturday.
Choe Hyeong-min topped the men's individual time trial while Lee Min-hye won the women's event.
Choe posted a winning time 1:8:16.12. The 20-year-old broke into tears after the last rider posted a slower time.
Eugen Wacker of Kyrgyzstan settled for the silver in 1:08:26.91 while Hossein Askari of Iran claimed bronze in 1:08:48.49. The men's race was held on a 17.8km course, where the competitors made three laps.
Muradjan Halmuratov of Uzbekistan placed fourth in 1:09:21.29. At fifth spot was Hong Kong's Cheung King Lok, who posted a time of 1:09:23.66.
Kazakhstan's Andrey Mizurov landed in sixth place in 1:09:24.89 while Japan's Kazuhiro Mori ranked seventh in 1:11:44.60.
Also making the top ten were Mongolian Tuguldur Tuulkhangai (1:12:19.47), Malaysian Ng Yong Li (1:12:25.16) and China's Ji Xitao (1:12:25.83).
Occupying the 11th to 20th places were Chinese Taipei's Feng Chun Kai, Indonesian veteran Tonton Susanto, Vietnam's Hieu Mai Cong, Saudi Arabia's Bader Mohamed Alyasin, India's Sombir, Lloyd Reynante of the Philippines, Qatar's Ahmed El Bourdainy, Macau's
Choi Heng Wa, Sri Lanka's Laxmen Wijerathna and Mohamed Almurawwi of the United Arab Emirates.
In the women's event, Lee bagged the gold in 49:38.35. It was Lee’s second medal of the meet after earlier winning a silver in the women’s individual pursuit in track cycling.
China's Jiang Fan finished second in 50:04.62 while Thailand's Chanpeng Nontasin came in third in 51:37.11.
Chinese Taipei's Tseng Hsiao-chia finished fourth in 53:05.18 while Japanese Mayuko Hagiwara landed in fifth spot in 53:11.69.
Yelena Antonova of Kazakhstan came in sixth with a time of 54:05.66 while Dinah Chan of Singapore ranked seventh in 54:38.30.
Rounding out the top ten were Hong Kong's Wong Wan Yiu (54:40.79), Marites Bitbit of the Philippines (55:10.12) and India's Sunita Y Devi (56:00.87).
Unlike the men's time trial, the female competitors needed only to make two laps.
The cycling events left to be contested are the men’s and women’s road races.
South Korea has now won four gold medals in the cycling competition. The East Asian powerhouse won two golds and one silver medal in the track cycling events to finish second behind hosts China (5-2-4).
Jang Sun-jae won the men's individual pursuit. He was also a member of the victorious team pursuit squad along with Cho Ho-sung, Hwang In-hyeok and Park Seon-ho.
