South Korean seizes lead in Asian Games golf
Kim Meen-whee emerged as the new leader in the 2010 Asian Games men's golf competition on Friday 19 November at 12-under overall.
The South Korean sizzled with a 5-under-par 67 in the third round of competition at the Dragon Lake Golf Club. Kim made an eagle on the Par-5 11th hole and sank four birdies to make up for a lone bogey.
He made birdies on the second, fifth, 14th and 17th holes and settled for a bogey on the 17th.
Kim improved to a 204 aggregate, six strokes ahead of erstwhile leader Miguel Tabuena of the Philippines heading into tomorrow's final round. The 16-year-old Filipino faltered with a 74, making only one
birdie against three bogeys.
Thailand's Atthachai Jaichalad shot the day's best score of 65 to climb to solo third spot with a 211. He made nine birdies to make up for back-to-back bogeys on the final two holes.
Rashid Khan (74) of India and Lee Jae-hyeok (74) of South Korea are tied in fourth spot with 213s.
Bunched in sixth spot at 214 are South Koreans Lee Kyoung-hoon (69) and Park Il-hwan (70) and Taiwanese Hung Chien-tao (73).
Satoshi Kodaira of Japan slipped to ninth place to join China's Zhang Xinjun at 215. The Japanese struggled with a 73 while Zhang carded a 71.
In the team event, South Korea is poised to win the gold after another outstanding performance. They tallied a 10-under-206 for a 624 aggregate. The Philippines and Thailand are tied in second place with
a 653. The Filipinos carded a 218 while the Thais submitted a 212.
In the women's individual event, Kim Hyun-soo of South Korea extended her lead from the rest of the pack. She sizzled with a 65 to improve to a 205 aggregate.
Kim HS made eight birdies against a lone bogey to put herself in a prime position for the gold. She is eight strokes clear of compatriot Han Jung-eun, who shot a 68 for the day.
Japan's Mamiko Higa and another South Korean Kim Ji-hee are tied in third spot with 217s. Higa carded a 72 while Kim JH made a 71.
Like their male counterparts, the South Korean women solidified their grip on the top spot in the team event. They shot a 133 to improve to a 418 aggregate. They are way ahead of China, which made a 142
for a 432.
Japan (143) and Chinese Taipei (148) are tied in third spot with 441s.
