South Koreans dominate bowling events in Asian Games
South Korea won three of the four golds at stake in the 2010 Guangzhou Asian Games bowling competition on Monday.
Their men's and women's teams bagged golds while Hwang Sun-ok topped the women's all-events at the Tianhe Bowling Hall.
The men's team of Choi Bok-eum, Choi Yong-kyu, Jang Dong-chul, Cho Young-seon, Hong Hae-sol and Suh Sang-cheon combined for 6654 pinfalls to win gold. Hong was the top performer in Block 2 with a 719.
Malaysia, represented by Adrian Ang Hsien Loong, Muhamad Syafiq Ridhwan, Kien Liang Liew, Muhammad Nur Aiman, Eng Chuan Aaron Kong and Zulmazran Zulkifli, claimed the silver with a 6579 effort.
Hong Kong's Cheuk Yin Mak, Siu Hong Wu, Pak Kei Tsang, Tak Hin Tseng, Wai Ki Yeung and Chun Chung Cheung pocketed the bronze with a 6475 final tally.
Choi Yong-kyu had no regrets despite losing to Liew in the men's all-around events.
"I might have lost my individual gold but winning the gold for everyone is much bigger," the South Korean told
Yonhap News.
"I figured if I made a mistake, then some of my team-mates would have to enter the military," added Choi, referring to the military service exemption that will be given out to South Korean males who win
gold in the Asian Games.
Choi Bok-eum won the bronze in the all-events.
In the women's team event, Choi Jin-a, Gang Hye-eun, Son Yun-hee, Hwang and Jeon Eun-hee made 6,711 pinfalls to win gold. They finished comfortably ahead of Indonesians Putty Armein, Lvana Hie, Novie Phang,
Sharon Adelina Liman Santoso and Tannya Roumimper, who posted a 6340 total.
The Malaysian team of Sharon Koh, Zatil Iman Abdul Ghani, Zandra Aziela Ibrahim Hakimi, Esther Cheah, Shalin Zulkifli and Li Jane Sin took the bronze.
Hwang made it a double victory when she also won the all-events title with 5508.
"I am trying not to get too excited over three gold medals, because there is still the masters portion left. I want to post good scores again," said Hwang, who bagged her third gold medal in Guangzhou
after earlier winning the women’s singles event.
Choi Jin-a (5276) claimed the silver while China's Zhang Yuhong (5131) took bronze.
South Korea has now won six golds, five silvers and a bronze in the bowling competition. They are way ahead of closest pursuers Malaysia (2-1-1) and Singapore (1-2-1) in the medal standings.
South Korea's other golds were won in the men's doubles and women's trios.
