South Koreans set pace in Asiad bowling trios
South Korea topped the first block of the men's and women's trios events in the 2010 Asian Games bowling competition on Friday.
Choi Yong-kyu, Jang Dong-chul and Choi Bok-eum blazed the Tianhe Bowling Hall lanes with 2053 pinfalls.
Choi YK was the best performer for the squad in the three-game block, posting scores of 272, 269 and 195 for a 736 total. Jang tallied a 687 while Choi BE registered a 630.
The South Korea Team 1 of Suh Sang-cheon, Cho Young-seon and Hong Hae-sol are running second with a combined total of 1984. Suh scored a 686, Cho tallied a 654 while Hong made a 644.
Qatar's Mansour Al Hajri, Mubarak Al Muraikhi and Fahad Alemadi are in third spot, just a pin behind the South Koreans. Al Muraikhi is the squad’s top scorer with a 690. Alemadi bowled a 669 while Al Hajri
posted a 624.
At fourth spot is Hong Kong. Wu Siu Hong, Tseng Tak Hin and Mak Cheuk Yin combined for a score of 1963.
Chinese Taipei (1946), Thailand (1914), China (1910), Indonesia (1905), the Philippines (1900) and the United Arab Emirates (1879) round out the top ten.
Just like their male counterparts, the South Korean women stamped their class in their event.
Choi Jin-a, Son Yun-hee and Hwang Sun-ok downed 2051 pins to surge on top of the leaderboard.
Choi made 718 pinfalls while Son and Hwang tallied 644 and 689, respectively.
They are 40 pins ahead of Singaporean trio Cherie Tan (633), Geraldine Ng (670) and Shayna Ng (708).
Japan's Maki Nakano (721), Misaki Mukotani (683) and Kanako Ishimine (604) are in third spot with a 2008.
Running fourth are Malaysians Esther Cheah (716), Sharon Koh (637) and Shalin Zulkifli (638) with a 1991 output.
Malaysia head coach Holloway Cheah expressed confidence that his wards will perform better in tomorrow's second block.
"Today, the girls showed escalation in their performance compared with the last two events. In today's long oil lane condition, they adapted well and I believe tomorrow's short oil lane condition, they
will be able to stamp their mark," he told Bernama.
China is in fifth place with a score of 1975. Chen Dongdong scored 663 while Zhang Yuhong and Yang Suiling tallied 661 and 651, respectively.
Rounding out the top ten are the Philippines (1952), South Korea 2 (1896), Singapore 2 (1869), Malaysia 2 (1838) and Indonesia 2 (1763).
The second block of the men’s and women’s trios will be contested tomorrow.
