South Sydney release Jamie Simpson for Huddersfield Giants
South Sydney has finally release Jamie Simpson ten months prior to the end of his contract for National Rugby League.
He will be joining Huddersfield Giants, an English Super League Club. Sydney’s utility back Jamie Simpson has played 37 matches for the Rabbitohs in the last three seasons and has successfully scored 16 tries. He did a memorable hat-trick in 2009 against
Roosters for Rabbitohs.
Jamie Lee Simpson is an Australian rugby league player for South Sydney in NRL and he plays at centre position as well as in wing position too. He was reckoned to be a very successful lock and five-eight in his school years, when he studied in St Brendan’s
College.
The 24-year-old Simpson was diagnosed of Cancer in 2002 and battled between life and death suffering through non-Hodgkin lymphoma. He went through chemotherapy in 2003 and remained in touch with rugby as an assistant coach for the school. While he was admitted
in isolation in hospital, he was gifted a book ‘Don’t Die with the Music in You’ by Wayne Bennett. Bennett added a personal message in it as well. It said, “Tough time comes and goes, but tough guys last forever”. He finally won against cancer and returned
to St, Brendan to complete his education in 2004.
In 2005-06, he started his senior career with Brisbane Broncos’ Aspley and Toowoomba Clysdesdales. He scored frequently for Aspley and gained honours for Queensland City in 2007. He was given opportunity to join NRL and he made his debut for Rabbitohs.
He is the second international Huddersfield Giants have signed after the legend Greg Inglis. Simpson expressed his gratitude towards both the current and new club.
He said, “It's a great opportunity for me to play rugby league in other countries and experience the rest of world. I'm grateful to the Rabbitohs for the opportunities they've given me over the past three seasons both on and off the field.”
Shane Richardson, the South’s chief executive said, “Jamie has an opportunity to head to the UK with Huddersfield and play in the elite rugby league competition in Europe.”
It indeed is a great opportunity for Simpson to explore a bit of world and play rugby in new environment.
