South Torrance boys volleyball team loses to Burbank Burroughs by 3-1
Tuesday night did not go the way the South Torrance boys volleyball team wanted. South Torrance was all set to avenge their loss against the Burbank Burroughs that they had experienced in March but South Torrance ended up with another defeat.
Burbank Burroughs remained successful in sealing the deal over South Torrance by winning the semi-final of the CIF Southern Section Division III.
Despite the fact that South Torrance won the first set of the game, they could not sustain momentum and gave away the next three sets to the Indians, who won the match by 3-1. By the time that the Indians were celebrating their well deserved win by jumping
with joy and the Spartans were eyeing their rivals enviously, the scoreboard read as 22-25, 25-23, 25-22 and 25-18.
The start of the first game of the match was intense as both the Indians as well as the Spartans battled each other to gain dominance at the court. What followed was a tug of war between the two teams that did not let the lead stay with either the Indians
or the Spartans for long. The score was tied at the 20-20 mark but the Indians managed to push past ahead and secure themselves the second set of the game at 25-23.
Winning the second set of the game gave the Indians the momentum they were looking for and the third set started off with the Indians coming out strong. Despite the fact that the Spartans kept on playing competitively, the Indians were just too good for
them. Particularly, the net play of the Indians was making all kinds of problems for the Spartans. As a result, it was not a hard job for the Indians to bag the third set of the game at 25-22.
The third set of the match also went on in a similar fashion as the second with the Indians securing it at 25-22.
With a two-set deficit, the pressure on the Spartans increased tremendously to make a win in the fourth if they wanted to give themselves a chance at winning the semi-final round. Unfortunately, for the Spartans, the effort that they put in did not do much
to rattle the Indians from playing superb volleyball and it was only a matter of time before they bagged the fourth and the final set at 25-18.
At the end of the match, Coach Kevin McElwee of the Spartans made the following comments about the Indians, “I feel like we got beat more than we lost. We played hard and the team did everything that we asked, but good teams make you do some things you don't
normally do. I give them all the credit in the world.”
