what is the best way to figure out which way I'm heading with out using a map or gps device?

  3. Use the north star for your reference. You can find it in the northern hemisphere if you follow the big-dipper constellation. The north-star is the one star that does not move, all the other stars rotate around it.

  4. The best way would be to use a compass.

    If you don't have a compass, you can use the sun. If the sun is up and it isn't noon, you can see which side of the sky the sun is to find the direction. Since the sun rises in the east and sets in the west, it'll be in the east during the morning, and in the west in the afternoon. Thus, if you have the west on your left and the east on your right, you're facing north. If it's the other way around, you're facing south.
