The 23-year-old, who came through the ranks of the Ajax Amsterdam youth academy, started his career at Vitesse in the 2008/09 season. The versatile player, who can play at any position down the left side of the pitch, quickly established
himself into one of the key players in the Vitesse squad.
The Dutchman has thus far donned the jersey of the Arnhem outfit in well over 100 Eredivisie matches, netting 10 goals while setting up plenty more along the way.
His impressive performances in the 2011/12 season helped the outfit from Arnhem to finish seventh on the league table. Fulham, QPR and Werder Bremen have expressed keen interest in acquiring his services before the new campaign
kicks-off. However, the midfielder preferred moving to St. Mary’s Stadium.
The Saints, who finished second on the NPower league table in the recently concluded 2011/12 campaign, earned promotion to play in the English Premier League.
Nigel Adkins, Southampton boss, was keen to add a quality left-back before the new season commences, and saw Buttner as a perfect addition to his squad.
After reaching an agreement over the transfer fee with the Eredivisie outfit, the newly promoted English Premier League side would be hoping that Buttner passes his medical at the earliest before the Saints could finalise personal
terms with the talented midfielder.
Southampton also recently acquired the services of Jay Rodriguez from Burnley in a deal believed to be in the region of eight million Euros. The 22-year-old striker, who netted 31 goals in 107 league appearances during his five-year
stay at Turf Moor, reportedly signed a contract that will keep him at St. Mary’s Stadium until the summer of 2016.
