Southeast Missouri Team receives straight set defeat from Arkansas State - Volleyball
The Red Wolves beat the Red Hawks in a match on Tuesday, September 13. The HPESS Centre in Jonesboro, Arkansas, hosted the wonderful performance, where the home squad saw off the visitors in three sets 3-0 (25-15, 25-23, and 25-16). The Red Hawks suffered
a great loss as it was their final non-conference match of the season.
The Arkansas State team jumped straight into the action and started out with the heavy strike of volleys. They showed no mercy and hit the ball hard and the Southeast Missouri side was flabbergasted with the early attack from the opposite side and lagged
behind. Red Wolves led the scores with 9-2 and put more pressure on the rival side. In the meanwhile, Red Hawks managed to bring a little stability in the game and scored points on the counter attacks. They added three more points while Red Wolves also clinched
one point. Afterwards, Ashley Tipps and Fielder came up with strong offensive attack and helped Red Wolves to claim the first set of the game, 25-15.
The second set of the match was tense and showcased extreme net action. The loss of the opening set had aggravated Red Hawks. However, the Red Wolves side was high on morale after winning the first frame. Both teams exchanged long rallies and struggled to
catch every little point in the second set. Nevertheless, neither of the teams could gain full control of the game. ASU had the edge with a four-point lead at 17-13 but Red Hawks continued with their effort to close the gap of points. They put up a spirited
effort and shortened the difference of points to 22-21. In the hour of need, Jasmine Terry of Red Wolves played tactfully and led her team to success. SEMO dropped the second set with slight margin of two points.
Third set was a do or die situation for Red Hawks as it was their only chance to save the game. They called in substitutions and staged some sensible play. Of course it was not easy to overcome the charged-up Red Wolves but SEMO gave them a hard time. ASU
trailed behind with a gap of 1-point at 9-10 but bounced back after back-to-back attacking errors from their opponents. Allison Kearney of Red Wolves delivered nice serves and converted them into aces, which put hosts back in lead at 12-10. Once the Red Wolves
crossed their opponents, they did not stop until the final whistle of the referee. ASU captured third set with 25-16 on board and declared match victory.
The top spiker for Red Wolves, Fielder, commented: “We really came out with a lot of energy after that 10 minute break in third set. If our defensive players get an awesome dig it just makes us want to get a kill even more because of the effort they put
out for the dig.”
