Southern California Volleyball Club 17 Quiksilver wins 17 Open Division gold medal
Wednesday, July 6th, saw the end of the USA Volleyball Boys’ Junior National Championships as Manhattan Beach Surf 17s and Southern California Volleyball Club 17 Quiksilver competed against each other for the 17 Open Division gold medal. The Minneapolis
Convention Center was witness to the clean sweep by SCVC over their opponents.
The match between the teams was hard fought and lasted all three sets. Both the teams came out strong in the first set of the game that ended in favour of MB Surf. However, SCVC did not give up and showed impressive skill to bring the match back to a deciding
third set. The final set of the match was as thrilling encounter with the match finally swinging in favour of SCVC. By the time the day was done, the scores stood at 25-21, 20-25 and 15-12.
The initial stages of the first set of the game seemed as if a tug of war was going on between the two teams and neither was letting the other take control of the court. After an impressive struggle to gain dominance, MB Surf finally emerged with a 13-11
lead. Once they had the lead, they were able to increase the pressure on SCVC by extending their advantage to 17-11. SCVC seemed to get nervous and showed inconsistency in their performance. MB Surf took advantage of the situation and extended their lead to
22-15. However, SCVC did not plan to go down without a fight and rejuvenated themselves by restricting the score of MB Surfs while closing in the gap at 24-21. This upset the MB Surf squad and in a final effort to stop SCVC from sealing the deal on the set,
they called a time out. As the two teams came back, MB Surf did not give SCVC much time to make any head way and bagged the opening set of the game at 25-21.
SCVC did not lose hope at the loss of the first set of the game and locked horns with MB Surf once again as soon as the second set started. After an intense struggle, MB Surf broke apart by taking the lead at 8-5 at which point a time out was called by SCVC.
It worked well for SCVC as they were able to close in the gap afterwards and tie the match at 14-14. SCVC went on to capture the set at 25-20.
After a couple of lead changes at the beginning of the third set, MB Surf found themselves at a leading position at 10-6. But SCVC successfully tied the score at 12-12 and went on to win the championship match at 15-12.
