Southern Equine Stable bought a third of Bodemeister
According to owner Ahmed Zayat, who runs his horse racing operation under the banner of Zayat Stables, said that many people of the industry were interested in buying into his Grade 1, $2 million Kentucky Derby early favourtie, Bodemeister.
The Grade 1, $1 million Arkansas Derby winner, has now been sold to Mike and Tiffany Moreno of Southern Equine Stable on 25 April, 2012, who own a third of the colt. The price of the purchase hasn’t been disclosed by Ahmed Zayat, but insisted that that the
deal was highly lucrative for the Stable.
“I was approached by many people in the industry looking for a chance to buy into this colt,” Zayat remarked. “I picked Mike because he’s a great sportsman and somebody who has spent a great deal of time and money building up a high-quality broodmare band
which will be good support to the colt when he eventually retires to stud. Mike is very excited about Bodemeister, as are we.”
Though, the Virginia bred son of Empire Maker will remain under Bob Baffert’s training, and as arrangement, Bodemeister will campaign under Zayat Stable’s management.
Out of mare Untouched Talent by Storm Cat, Bodemeister going into the Kentucky Derby, shot up his graded stakes earnings after taking home the lion share of the Arkansas Derby purse, and currently he is sitting pretty with a $704,800 bankroll.
Bob Baffert took his fast developing three-year-old colt out at the Churchill Downs’ dirt track to breeze five eighths of a mile in 1 minute and 4/5 seconds on 24 April, 2012.
Foaled on 28 April, 2012, Bodemeister was purchased as a yearling at the 2010 Keeneland September yearling sale for $260,000, and Baffert sent him for his debut race on 16 January, 2012, at Santa Anita to run over a distance of five and a half furlongs.
Bodemeister was second best on that occasion, but atoned for his defeat in his next start over at a mile. Seen as a potential Kentucky Derby prospect, he was on the Derby trail in no time, as he finished second in the Grade 2 San Felipe Stakes to winner,
