Southern Regional defeats St. Joseph’s Metuchen 2-1 in State semi-final: High School Volleyball
Southern Regional High School boys volleyball team was able to beat St. Joseph’s Metuchen by 2-1 and advance to the final match of the state championship. The Rams’ semi-final took place Tuesday, June 8.
The first set of the game saw the Rams dominate the courts for the most part and bag the opening set. Metuchen was able to step up in the second set and bring the game to a tie. Unfortunately, the Rams outplayed their rivals in the third and final set of
the game by taking it to the net and clinching it with a comfortable margin.
Eric Maxwell, the coach of the Rams commented on the match and his team performance, "These games are about being scrappy and mental toughness. It's a high level of ball. Our guys are able to deal with making mistakes because they know the coach said it
was going to happen. It doesn't matter how it looks, as long as they come out with a win in the end."
The Rams will move on to the finals with an impressive performance record under their belt. They have been able to bag a total of 31 wins so far at the cost of suffering only one defeat. Other than that, the Rams have come to the finals seven times. This
is not the only reason that the Rams should be playing the final with confidence. The fact that they have had the honour of being the defending champions for two times adds to the swagger of the Rams as well.
The first set of the game started off with both the Rams and Metuchen going in for the kill. The initial part saw both the teams struggle for dominance. However, as the set reached the middle stages, Metuchen was able to take the lead at 17-14. Despite the
deficit, the Rams were able to rally together and bag the first set of the game at 25-20.
Having lost the opening set of the game sent a much needed wake up call to Metuchen who were able to come out stronger than before. Consequently, they won the second set at 25-19. However, the Rams did not let the last and final set slip away from them and
played in a dominating fashion to stand victorious in the last set at 25-17.
The team that the Rams are up against in the final that is scheduled to take place on Thursday is Fair Lawn. The courts of South Brunswick are expected to host a thrilling competition between the Rams and the champions of North 1 as Fair Lawn tallies a commendable
overall season record as well.
