Chris Mpofu’s 4-wicket haul set up a 9-run win for the Matabeleland Tuskers, as they went on to beat the Southern Rocks in the ongoing http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Zimbabwe-c3045 One-Day Competition, played at the Masvingo Sports Club on October 13.
Rain led to the match being delayed, and when the showers ceased, the match was shortened to 31 overs per side. Once the game got underway, the Rocks won the toss and elected to field first. Making his List A debut, Cuthbert Musoko claimed an impressive
4 for 24, while skipper Tinanshe Panyangara chipped in with 2 for 19, to limit the Tuskers to 140.
Opener http://www.senore.com/Cricket/SC-Williams-c2464 (33) remained the only top-order batsmen who managed to chip in with decent scores, but their 17-run stand was cut short with Duffin caught and bowled by Musoko in the 11th over. Opener Brian Chari contributed
just 1 before he was bowled by Panyangara, while http://www.senore.com/Cricket/CK-Coventry-c1267 were both dismissed by Musoko in the 13th over.
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Williams-c98034 for a 28-run stand for the 5th wicket, after which the latter became Musoko’s final wicket of the day. Dabengwa followed in the 23rd over, sent packing by Peter Burgoyne, and the only high point of
the team’s innings was a 50-run stand for the 7th wicket, between skipper http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Richard-Glenn-Querl-c85016 (23).
The 30th over saw both Meth and http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Bradley-Staddon-c48314 (4) sent back to the pavilion, and with Querl’s dismissal on the final ball of the last over, the Tuskers finished at 140 by the end of 31 overs.
The Tuskers then launched a successful defence of their target, with Mpofu (6-0-19-4) leading the charge, while Querl (6-0-29-2) and Meth (7-3-15-2) chipped in with supporting performances.
Top-order batsmen http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Tendai-Chisoro-c2655 (15) both attempted to revive the team’s innings with a 33-run stand for the 4th wicket. However,
both batsmen were sent packing by Mpofu by the 21st over.
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Tawanda-Mupariwa-c92913 (22) tried to keep the momentum going, and chipped in with a 31-run partnership – however, both were soon dismissed in successive overs, by Mpofu and Keith Dabengwa, respectively.
From there onwards, the Rocks’ batsmen were unable to stand up to the challenge posed by the chase, and following the dismissals of skipper Panyangara (9) and wicketkeeper batsman http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Brian-Vitori-c1198 (4*) and Musoko (1*) remained the last
two batsmen at the crease. By the end of 31 overs, the Rocks found themselves still at 131 and short of the target, enabling the Tuskers to claim a 9-run victory.
