Led by skipper http://www.senore.com/Cricket/BRM-Taylor-c1200’s vital half-century, the Mid West Rhinos claimed a 3-wicket win over the Southern Rocks, in the ongoing Zimbabwe Domestic Twenty20 Competition, at the Masvingo Sports Club today on October 11.
The Rhinos had previously claimed a comprehensive 100-run win against the Rocks in the domestic one-day competition which is concurrently taking place, and while they managed to continue the winning streak in the T20 format, the victory was a narrow one, with just one ball remaining.
The Rocks won the toss and decided to bat first, and http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Michael-Chinouya-c1951 (4-0-23-3) led the Rhinos’ charge. However, the Rocks managed to make it to a respectable total of 146 by the end of 20 overs.
Openers http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Ben-Slater-c1141 (57) and Peter Burgoyne (38) rescued the team’s innings, setting up a 74-run partnership for the third wicket.
Burgoyne was sent packing by Chinouya in the 13th over, but Slater went on to set up a 22-run stand with http://www.senore.com/Cricket/TN-Garwe-c2695 (2*) got the team up to 146 by the end of 20 overs, at the expense of 5 wickets.
In response, the Rhinos embarked on what proved to be a thrilling chase, with skipper http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Tinashe-Panyangara-c94107 (4-1-23-2) and Cuthbert Musoko (3-0-21-2) leading the Rocks’ attack.
Opener http://www.senore.com/Cricket/MA-Vermeulen-c1872 (11). Both were dismissed in successive overs – Vermeulen by Kaia in the 6th and Sibanda by Panyangara in the 7th – after which skipper Taylor stepped up to the crease.
Taylor contributed an individual score of 54, in addition to setting up a 23-run stand with http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Malcolm-Waller-c74039 (7), followed by a 52-run partnership for the 4th wicket with Steven Trenchard (27).
Taylor’s departure in the 16th over off Musoko was followed by the swift dismissals of http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Remembrance-Nyathi-c84657 (4*) easily got the team over the finish line, enabling the Rhinos to reach 147 with one delivery remaining, and 3 wickets still in hand.
