Question:

Southwest Airlines? Alaska Airlines?

Who likes Southwest Airlines? What are your pros and cons? I've flown them but I'm just wondering what other people think. Do you wish they had inflight meals? How do they keep the cost so low.

Who has flown Alaska Airlines? What are they like? Are they good? Pros and cons?

Also, which is better to be a pilot for: Chautaqua, Comair, or Skywest?

  1. I would prefer the Southwest.

Because they have more planes than Alaska A.

It a great fealing flying one.......

  2. I don't like southwest airline's. That's me. But i herd they have nice staff, however after this whole ordeal with unsafely plane's, that made me distrust them even more. Alaska airline's is fine by me. They don't fly on the east coast, therefore i rarely see the. Depending on where you live, depends on which airline you might think is better. If you live in Colorado, Sky west, in the Northeastern area such as Philly, Chautauqua, and in Georgia and the southern states maybe Comair.

  3. Alaska just doesn't fly enough places around the US.

I would definitely have to pick Southwest.  They have the lowest fares of any US airline.  $49 for a flight half way across the country is incredible.  Of course they don't fly out of the country, but as far as their prices go, it is completely worth it.  I am glad that they don't serve meals, because that is one of the many reasons that helps keep their prices low.  In addition, their pilots are paid a very pretty penny.  Also, they are very friendly.  I know about them putting up those planes when they were past due for inspection, but if everyone knew what all of the airlines did to cut costs, such as risking getting down to emergency fuel levels on every flight to save money, that wouldn't be as big of a thing.

  4. Never flown Alaska. I DO like southwest, their crews are fun. There are no inflight meals and you ont have assigned seats. Southwests fares are great.

Here's an online forum with airline reviews:

By the way ... Flying down to emergency low fuel levels is NEVER a practice airlines use to save money/

  5. Well, I don't fly on them, but I fix them.

I have worked on both, and they are both well maintained, in spite of what the media says.

Southwest has a whole lot of planes, and keeps their costs down by only flying one type of plane (737s), not serving meals, and not having a first class section. They are having their planes modified for better fuel economy.

Alaska has a very exacting maintenance program, and flies in places that nobody else does. Their planes see a lot of use in extreme environments. They put a lot of money into keeping their planes in good shape.

Generally, the bigger the airline, the better it is to fly for.

  6. I Like SouthWest Airlines, they are very fun people. I guess having everything standarized like their airplanes (all 737's) makes everything easier for them to reduce costs. They don't serve meals either. About Alaska, no idea, sorry.

About the regional airlines you mentioned, all of them are good airlines. However it depends on where you live or what are your plans in the future. For example if you live in Atlanta and you don't mind being a First Officer for more than 5 years at a regional, Comair would be a first choice. If you want faster upgrade to Captain and you live close to their bases, then Chautauqua (Republic Holdings) or SkyWest should be your choice. The term "Bigger Airline, Better Airline" is completely false. Mesa Airlines is bigger than a lot of other regionals, however they are considered the worst airline to work for.

    Hope this helps!
