I noticed you don't need a 737 type rating for an interview a pilot interview at Southwest Airlines, but it is required for employment. Does Southwest offer this training? Or do you have to go find some school to train you? Most airlines will train you when you're hired. I'm just confused. Thanks!

  1. contact SWAPA, the southwest airlines pilot association and ask them directly.

  2. Comair has incorrect information - Southwest does require the certification for employment, and does not offer the training.

  3. That is Southwest's policy.  It has nothing to do with regs or what other airlines do (sorry Comair).  Anyone can apply and get an interview, but before you start flying you must obtain your own type rating.  I've been told it keeps their insurance down.

There are handfuls of training centers around the U.S. that can type you for ~$5000-7000.

  4. Mike is right.  Southwest will interview pilots without the type, but you must get it within six months of being offered the job or they will not hire you.  It's the only airline I know of that requires this.  I'm surprised Comair doesn't know this.  Most airlines do train you when hired, but SWA prides itself on being different from most airlines.  If you read the book, "Nuts," it explains why SWA has this requirement.

So, which airline do you work for Comair?  How many type ratings do you have?  Just curious.  If you havn't heard that SWA requires a type, you havn't been in the industry very long.
