Southwest Sydney - areas to avoid?

Hello everyone. I am a young professional currently in Melbourne, but may be moving to Sydney soon to start a new job. The job is likely based in Minto, in a suburb north of Campbelltown. Hopefully I want rent nearby to reduce commute time and cost. I want to know if there are any specific areas to avoid - I know Macquarie Fields (drug dealers) and Claymore (CenterLink junkies).

How about the train service that runs in the area, is it safe, frequent or reliable? How about ease of buying groceries, or do I have to go regularly to Campbelltown?

P.S. I *know* some of you are going to start on 'Westie' wisecracks.

  1. I live in South West Sydney.. and never had a problem within the last 5 years.. but my dads car got stolen once, another car people smashed the window trying to steal it and ended up damaging all the electrical wires to start the car. Brother got jumped by the so called "fairfield boyz" who hang around the local shopping center, and maccas carpark and think they're all that.. they dont have anything better to do with their time.. gahh!

There are drug dealers everywhere in the southwest.

Train service? Reliable? Its gone downhill.. isnt as reliable as it was before. There are places you can buy groceries in every area of Sydney, so dont worry :)

  2. Areas to avoid - um  South West Sydney, not just part of it.. all of it. LOL.

Honestly,  some of the worst parts of Sydney are over that way.   Southeast would have been better, or if you have a car, go further out again. There are plenty of smaller towns out past Campbelltown that won't have the big city issues that South west Sydney has and would still be less than 30 mins commute.

  3. Very dodgy near Darlington
