Question:

Souvenirs for a family in Costa Rica?

I'm staying in a host family in Costa Rica for a week. I would like to bring some souvenirs for them from the states, but I have no idea what to get.

I thought about chocolates and other treats from the US, but I have seen them in Costa Rica too.

I want to get something they will like but they cannot get in Costa Rica.

I remember my Brazilian friend went crazy for Victoria Secrets’ body lotion. She says it is hard to get and very expensive in her country.

Does anybody know any products that are popular in Costa Rica and easier/cheaper to get them in the state?

By the way, I’m on budget and I prefer something small and easy to carry.

Thank you for your advise!

  1. bring them good looking metal key rings from US cities or the statue of Liberty

Most people will love that and many even collect them.

  2. Most things are a lot more expensive in Latin America, so even if it's there, chances are it's something they won't buy because of the cost.  I've bought things such as calendars to bring as presents.  If you can get a cheap flash drive, those go over big, too.  Just don't buy coffee, and you'll probably be fine.

  3. They would flip over any kind of "decent" body lotions and body sprays! Even those little "Travel" sizes you can find in our Drug and Grocery stores!

I always take several to the ladies I know in Costa Rica and they really go bananas over them!

Costa Rica really does not produce any of these to any great extent and they have to import the little that they have - then when their import taxes go into effect on them - they become priceless and out of reach!

  4. I guess it really depends on your host family... but for females I agree with the comments on lotions and body sprays, you can try either VS or Bath and Body Works... if theres a  teen in the house something from Claire's will work too. For young guys, maybe you can find some inexpensive accessory from Gap or Old Navy....really tougher to pick. lol  If they're into books... that could be a cool gift. Everything is cheaper to buy in the states than in CR because of the taxes...so ultimately I'm sure whatever you buy someone will appreciate the gesture! Pura Vida!

  5. For women:  cosmetics (they're expensive), shampoos, lotions (Victoria's Secret ones will be a hit).

For men:  gadgets like small flashlights, chocolate bars, and more chocolate bars.

    One more thing:

The little bottles of antibacterial cleaner like Purell.
