is the taliban doing the same thing to the US that they did to the Russians in the 1980s, and just try to slowly bankrupt their opponents?

  1. If you're old enough to remember? The United States secretly funded the Afgan rebels; that was how they beat the Russians.

  2. The Taliban are fighting in the current US operation in Afghanistan, not Iraq.

The Taliban are trying to do the same thing the mujaheddin did to the USSR.  Osama Bin Laden's plan was to attack the US, draw it into Afghanistan and defeat it like the mujaheddin did the USSR.

He made many miscalculations among them:

    1.  Underestimated the importance of US supplied weaponry to the mujaheddin, particularly Stinger missiles.

    2.  Totally misjudged the ability of the US military to conduct counterinsurgency operations.

    3.  Thought he would get more support from the Muslim community as a whole, Muslims are not flocking to Afghanistan to fight the US the way they did to fight the USSR.  Even before the Iraq war this was the case.

  3. well didn't the US fund the taliban in the Soviet War, and aren't the Irans (and other OPEC countries) funding the taliban now against the americans?

  4. You should probably look into this a little better. We helped the taliban beet the Russians. No one is helping them at the moment, unless you count Pakistan's lack of action in there own country to control the northern border. That might be looked on as helping.
