  1. For those citing the Japanese, etc., who eat so much soy...one thing I heard was that they don't consume it nearly as much as an American vegetarian! They don't drink tons of soymilk, and even with soy, I heard that they use tempeh, which is fermented soy. Also miso, which is cultured...So I think there should be a closer look at this. It is possible that there are downsides to foods that we consider so healthy.

One more thing to consider: the excess consumption of protein!

  2. You can find articles that say that ANYTHING will produce cancer (including water) .....  I think the benefits far outweigh any negatives.  I've heard that tofu / soy are the most perfect sources of protein.....

  3. Cause cancer?  What idiot said that?

    It's a freak'n BEAN.

    'nuff said.

  4. Well, people in the Far East eat more soy than Westerners on average, and yet they have lower cancer rates than us.

This isn't the be all and all of course, but I would say moderate amounts of natural soy foods can be enjoyed without any adverse risk of harm. I would be cautious about large amounts of concentrated soy isolate being consumed often, as this is different from the traditional Asian use of soy. But in small amounts, should again not be a problem.

  6. I've never heard that? I've always heard that soy can help PREVENT cancer.

  7. I dont think it causes cancer. People in places like Japan eat it every day practicly since they were born and they dont all have cancer...I read that a little bit of soy every day help with hormones and that women who eat soy everyday hardly get hot flashes during menopause if any...

  8. This possibility of causing cancer is probably incorrect or has probably been exaggerated as the antioxidants in soy products actually help to prevent cancer.

A web search for "whole soy story" will give you a lot of further and conflicting information.  A web search for soy + cancer is also useful.

  9. Soya proteins contain isoflavones that can mimic a weak oestrogen effect. It's not the same as the oestrogen your own body makes though - it is 1,000 times weaker than your own body's oestrogen.

There is no actual scientific evidence that soya causes, prevents, contributes to or affects the progress of cancer, including oestrogen positive breast cancer, which is the one most often cited, though there are concerns. But there are also those in the field who argue that isoflavones may be of help in preventing breast cancer or be beneficial to women who have had breast cancer.

There is current research into whether increasing phyto oestrogens in the diet helps to prevent breast or prostate cancer, and a study in 2002 found that women with the highest levels of soya products in their diets had the lowest breast density - higher breast density being associated with higher breast cancer risk. This is the first time that soya has been found to have a direct effect on breast tissue.

Women with the highest levels of isoflavones in their diet are reported to have significant risk reductions for uterine cancer.

  10. Nowadays, what doesn't have the posibility to cause cancer?

  11. really? I heard the opposite.
