  1. Actually, recent research has shown that soy protein isolates (and not just in huge amounts) can mess with your estrogen levels.  In women, this can mean longer periods and a higher risk of cancers associated with estrogen, such as breast, and in men this can mean man b***s and prostate cancer.  This research has been done by fairly reputable sources, though sometimes it has been funded by dairy farmers.

Soy has been used in Asian diets for hundreds if not thousands of years, true, and Japanese people (who eat a fair amount of soy products) are supposed to be the healthiest on earth.  However, they consume soy in less-refined products: edamame, for example, and even tofu have more of the soy in them than does soy milk.  Many nutritionists now reccomend limiting your consumption of food with soy isolates, such as some of the Boca Burger-type things, and soy milk.  However, if you're not guzzling the stuff, and you don't have any history of hormone problems/cancer in the family/etc, you're probably okay.  Most things, in moderation, are not going to hurt you; it's when any one thing forms too large a percentage of your diet that you have problems.

So yeah--certainly try out rice/almond/hemp milk and see if one of those suits you, but a LITTLE soy milk is probably better for you than the same amount of regular milk, which pretty much every study not funded by dairy farmers says is pretty bad for most people.  Maybe you should run some of those by your mom.

  2. Soy contains phyto-estogens (meaning plant estogens) in *really* large doses soy could muck with your hormone balance - I've seen this in a few news articles - could this be the health issue your mom is concerned about?

  3. i think any product in excess can cause problems.

when my son was a baby he had to go on soy formula but before that i did alot of research on the difference.

if i remember right several sources attributed several cancers and abnormal periods etc in girls to soy milk.  several sources claimed it lead to girls starting ovulation at very young ages like 8-10.  but for every bit of research about soy that says its bad, there's about fifty that say how good it is.

  4. Soy milk is GOOD for you, especially if you're a female - and the vanilla and chocolate are delicious.  I'm not a vegetarian, but still drink soy milk (I'm lactose-intolerant).  It costs more than regular milk, though, so maybe she just doesn't want to pay the extra cost.

  5. Soy milk is good for you. The only thing is that, you should make sure that the soy milk uses soybeans that were NOT genetically modified.

Soy milk doesnt cause cancer, and the estrogen in soy is so weak that it wont have any effect on you, so drink what you want. Still, I wouldn't have more than 2 cups a day.

  6. Yes it gives u breast cancer if female. For instance look at all the celebrities who are vegeterian and drink soy, they get breast cancer! google it and do some research!

  7. The balance of research suggests that moderate consumption of soy (like a couple servings a day) are perfectly healthy.  I'm sure you're fine with your soymilk consumption, but there are tons of other plant milks you can try.  There's rice milk, oat milk, almond milk, hazelnut milk and hemp milk.  (If you try another one and your mom criticizes that one too, you'll know she's just not supportive of you going vegan.)

Edit to add that Mercola is a shill for the diary industry.  Don't rely on google to research this stuff.  Look for peer-reviewed research from a reputable source like pubmed.

  8. Actually, I've heard the same thing.

There is a ton of information at your finger tips with Google.  I would honestly suggest using it to find your answer.  There are way more sources than the ones I've listed below.

I do have to get this off my chest: Why do people insist on using Yahoo! Answers for EVERYTHING?  One person once asked how much Disneyland tickets cost.  Um, duh, go to Disneyland.com.

  9. Soymilk is better for you than regular milk.  It is no more dangerous than regular milk.

  10. ur mom is full of cr*p. Soy milk is perfectly fine for you.

  11. To much of anything is not good for you.  If you drank to much milk it could cause health problems also.
