Question:

Soy milk/tofu?

I recently bought a plain lite soymilk (can't remember the brand but it's like 60 calories) and I thought it was kinda sweet and vanilla flavory (I'm surprised it was only plain and not vanilla). What are some drinks you can make with soy milk and tofu in like a blender? My friend said carrots and blueberries were good with soy milk and tofu. Also what are some ways to gradually get more healthy in my diet (like what do things like hot dogs/hamburgers made from veggies take like)? I don't really eat anything unhealthy but there are ways I could eat healthier. What are some good places to buy stuff like that? I'm trying to lose weight because I have to have surgery and I'm 16 so it's already a risk. I'd like to lose 50 pounds by the end of the year. Is that possible? Thanks. Please help. Thanks.

  1. Depending on how much you weigh now, 50 pounds may or may not be reasonable.  My dad lost over 60 pounds in 6 months by changing to a vegan diet - he had the weight to lose, if you know what I mean.

I would recommend you focus on eating plant material - fruits and veggies.  Skip the "fake meat" and "fake cheese" stuff - not only is it full of FAT it's full of isolated/condensed soy protein - not something you want to eat a lot of.  Soy milk and tofu (soy products in a "natural" state) are much better for you and can be used in moderation.

Try eating salads, stir fries, portabello mushroom burgers etc.  You'll not only look better, you'll feel better.  Just be smart and do your research.

  2. 50 pounds is too much to lose by the end of the year.  You should aim for 1-1.5 pounds of weight loss per week, but you will not lose weight every week (at least not according to a scale).  A more reasonable goal is to lose 4-8 pounds a month.  The more slowly you lose, the more likely you will keep it off.

You don't want to overeat soy products.  Vegetarians do eat soy, but we also try to get our nutrients from a variety of foods.

Tofu is not necessarily a "diet" food.  It's all about portion control.  You should only eat enought to feel "not hungry" or "neutral" never "full."  Check out a book called The Rules of Normal Eating.

Good luck!  Exercise is very helpful also.  You won't lose as much weight, but your body will look amazing and your health will improve markedly.  Nothing tastes as good as being fit feels!
