Space Marines and Imperial Guard?

Hi,

I am currently collecting Warhammer 40K Space Marines, and I am wondering if you are able to use Imperial guard and Space Marines in the same battle. There are some stratigical up-sides to this.

Firstly I can use the Guards as cannon fodder or as a distraction, also Lemon Russ's ordinance weapon is better than that of a Whirlwind

Not in a proper tournement battle.  Usually if its not in the codex, its a no-go.  The only army that can mix space marine chapters and guard are usually the Inquisition.  Witch Hunters I believe.
