Probably a stupid question but how much space should I leave inbetween studs to accommodate a 36" door? Probably 36" but I'm just making sure... Thanx!

  1.   Like Donna said 38 inches.. That ll leave 1 inch to accomadate  the 3/4 inch frame  and some outta plumb and shimming space . You won t hurt to dbl up on studding in the hinge side too GL

  2. a 36'' means the door only--you need room for the frame.

  3. If you are buying a door/frame combo, it will tell you on the frame, but just to be sure I'd leave about 38-39 inches between the studs, because you may have to shim a bit to get the door to hang properly.

  4. You need to allow for the door jamb. Here is a silte that can explain it to you:

They say to add 6" but if you have the prehung door then measure the width and add 1/2" on each side. Just make sure your studs are plumb and level. You will need to shim and this is great in case the foundation settles....you can remove the molding and replumb your door by replacing shims.

Good luck! I actually had an opening that I added a door to a hallway to and had to add a jamb and then find the door to fit. Turned out I could use a 30" door and thank god for all the molding that is available!
