Spaceman Lee orbits around competition at Nottingham
The Nottingham Greyhound Stadium was home to some exciting 500m races this morning. Racing fans were treated to a 12-race card that featured some great performances by heavily favoured contenders.
In the first race of the day, an A3 race that was held at 11:03, Spaceman Lee rocketed to a big first-place finish. Staked at the 9-4 favourite to win this race, Spaceman Lee did not disappoint the racing fans in attendance. He finished the race with a time of 30.96, and led first coming out of trap four.
Finishing 3¾ lengths behind Spaceman Lee was Sullane Wave. Carrying 7-2 odds into this race, he took second place with a 31.26 finish. Hanley Return (3-1) claimed third place in 31.40, 1¾ lengths out of the number two spot.
Keljo Tadita (7-2) was the fourth dog to finish this race, checking in with a time of 31.48. She was just a single length behind Hanley Return. Fifth place went to Natural Habitat (5-1), who finished in 31.70, which was 2¾ lengths behind the fourth-place finisher. Capla Gold’s (5-1) last-place finish in 31.80 was anything but golden, but was only 1¼ lengths out of the fifth position.
Next on the card was another A3 race at 11:19. This race also saw a favourite turn in a strong performance. Before the race, the oddsmakers selected Calzaghe Gale as the 5-2 favourite to win, and win he did with an impressive 30.71 finish. After emerging from trap two, he led third, and ran a great race overall.
Rabras Fountain (7-2) was the second-place finisher, and earned his position by finishing the race in 31.07. However, he crowded the run up, and fell to 4½ lengths behind the winner as a result. The third position went to Droopys Fran (6-1), whose 31.11 finish put her only a ½ length out of second place.
Laying claim on fourth place was Romeo Vieri (3-1). He ran to a 31.33 finish, which was 2¾ lengths behind Droopys Fran. Sky Airwolf (7-1) could not get himself off of the runway today, and finished in fifth as a result. Despite crowding second and third, he managed to finish only a head’s length behind fourth place in 31.34.
The sixth and final dog to finish the race was Clondoty Mystic (4-1), who finished 1¾ lengths behind Sky Airwolf with a time 31.48.
Racing fans will fill Nottingham Greyhound Stadium again on Friday 10 September when the track will up the ante with an action-packed 15-race card. The first race is scheduled to begin at 18:28.
