  1. Yes. It's kinda complicated to explain on Y/A answers.

The short answer is that  Franco and others didn't like the direction the Government was taking(towards socialism and disestabilshment of the Church, among other things)  and started a rebellion, the Germans and the Italians backed Franco and the USSR backed the Government (nationalists) and Spain was used as a testing ground for weapons and tactics that were to be used in WWII. A very nasty bloody conflict.

  2. The politics of the Civil War are seriously complicated. All you can do is read books by non-Spanish Authors. (the locals all have nasty axes to grind).

The only good Spanish book is 'La Guerra inCivil ' by Borgés.

The classic history is by Hugh Thomas and has the obvious title of 'the Spanish Civil War'.

For light reading try 'Homage to Catalunya' by George Orwell.

There is a lot of information in this site.

    Greetings from Spain!!

  4. Of course, Borges wasn´t Spanish, either.

Try Iberia by Michener.  It´s really old, but has some good stuff in it.

Everything I know about the war was from people I knew there, and my Spanish classes.  Nasty stuff went on.  Serious animosity between the two sides.

Trivia question...who won the war...the Republicans or the Socialists?  Had to work that one out once for a Trivial Pursuit game...tough, since we all learned it was the Fascists.
