  1. In the 20th century in Spain there have been two different dictatorship regimes.

The first one was commanded by Miguel Primo de Rivera, Barcelona's Military Governor, in September 1923, who led a coup d'etat against the parliamentery regime. King Alfonso XII endorsed the coup and made him head of Government. However in January 1930 King Alfonso dismissed him because of the increasing social dissatisfaction (mainly due to the economical situation derived from the Worldwide depression in 1929).

Next year king Alfonso agreed to call municipal elections. Support for the monarchy collapsed and Alfonso went into exile and the Republic was proclaimed.

However in July 1936 another coup d'etat by General Francisco Franco and others marked the beginning of Spanish Civil War. Officialy the War finished in April 1939 and Franco procalimed himself as 'Generalisimo'. His dictatorship finished when he died, in November 1975 and democracy was restorated.

  2. Spain was a dictatorship under the rule of Franco (1939-1975). I haven't lived through the dictatorship, but family members have. You can find more information at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spain_under...
