Spain & Tolerance?

Question

I'm thinking of taking a trip to Spain next summer, but I am having some reservations. For those that have been to Spain, what is the cultural tolerance of the Spanish? Everytime I mention of going to Spain, I keep hearing "racist". Of course their is racism everywhere, but I'm hearing that it is blatant. I spoke to someone whose sister traveled there and she said that the doorman of a club actually told her he wasn't letting her in because she was black.

I've also heard from a friend who studied abroad in Brazil, that most of the students who transfered there study abroad from Spain, loved Brazil better. Black, white & Mexican all thought that Brazil was a nice change b/c of their experiences in Spain.

Everyone's travel experiences are different but I hear the worst about Spain.

Any thoughts or experiences would be appreciated!

I live in Spain, in "Lloret de Mar(Costa Brava)" and it's known in all Europe for its alcohol, s*x and drugs tourism, if you don't want this, don't come here because the only thing you can do is going to the beach and having night party.

The best option is that you go to Barcelona, it's really near where i live, and it's a great city!

Don't worry, people here aren't racist, well maybe somebody, but be sure you can go to a club. Perhaps what happened to your friend is that she was in an alcoholic-tourism area.

Anyway i'm sure you'd enjoy it.

Ok, I went to Spain last year and loved every minute of it. I didn't have any problems at all. I am not black but I am not skinny and they treated me alot better than most Americans do. I wouldn't go to Brazil if I were you. My family is from there and they say it is very dangerous for Americans. They kidnap you thinking your family is rich and can send money for your release. Your lucky if your family actually has some cash to send over but if not...learn portuguese!

i think you will find racist comments and attitudes the world over, there will always be one person among a multitude of other, unfortunately you wont find a country to travel to where racism doesnt exist at all. however in most countries ppll with this attitude are generally in the minority, and Spain in my experience , doesnt have a major racism problem. Whenever i was in spain, i saw lots of differnt nationalities and colours living there and enjoying themselves with the Spanish ppl. iv never heard anything bad in these terms about Spain, always v friendly and smiling to u. iv never been to Brazil like ur friend so i cant compare the two places.

i think you should on on holidays to spain and enjoy it, its a great place, u will have a fab time, if unfortunatley u do come across someone with a bad attitude to u , they are not worth ur worry or upset, or ruining your holiday over.

I live in Andalucia and I've never seen or heard racist comments. I have black friends here and there are no problems. Your friends obviously have no idea about Spain. I'm from the UK but I have Spanish neighbours and they are wonderful people. I've just come back from the doctors and everyone was corteous to me.

Before coming to live here, I had come to Spain since the 70's and I disagree completely with your friends.

ABSOLUTE RUBBISH!

I owuld swear, but I won't.

I've been to Spain about 13 times, and often shared appartment blocks with black people, and the worst thats ever happened to anybody I've known whos been to spain is travel sickness.. And the places I've been, Costa Del Sol, Madrid, Barcelona, anywhere along the southern coast, people just accept you for who you are.

The Spanish are lovely, as long as your not mean to them, they wont be mean back.
