Spain coach: Too early to judge Real Madrid’s silverware hopes
Spain national team coach Vicente del Bosque said today that it was too early into Jose Mourinho’s reign as Real Madrid boss to determine the club’s chances of winning silverware this season.
Mourinho took over the Spanish giants in the summer and has presided over a series of transfers in and out of the club as he oversaw an overhaul of the squad.
Due to the number of players that have joined Madrid over the summer —including the likes of 2010 FIFA World Cup stars Mesut Ozil and Sami Khedira as well as former Chelsea star Ricardo Carvalho — Mourinho is still trying to establish his best team and will
be eager to see all of the newcomers settle in at the Bernebau as soon as possible.
Del Bosque, himself a former Madrid boss who delivered two Primera Division championships and two UEFA Champions League titles during his four seasons in charge, was speaking at UEFA’s conference for national team coaches.
'Only at beginning of season'
He told reporters that, despite Madrid rising to the top of the table after their 3-0 win over Espanyol last night, it was still far too early to determine the side’s credentials as they chase silverware both domestically and in Europe. He said that: “It
is too early to make an assessment, despite their win. We are only at the beginning of the season.”
Madrid have made an unbeaten start to the new campaign to sit at the top of the La Liga standings with ten points from four games. An opening day draw at Mallorca saw them drop their only points so far, having since won against Osasuna, Real Sociedad and
Espanyol.
Mourinho’s side have also got their Champions League campaign off to a strong start after defeating Dutch giants Ajax 2-0 at the Bernebau in their opening group stage game.
