Spain defeats Great Britain in Women’s Water Polo: Quarterfinal – London Olympic Games
Spain defeated Great Britain in the Quarterfinal of Women’s Water Polo match on ninth day of the water polo events at the 2012 London Olympic Games in Water Polo Arena on Sunday, August 5.
Spain remained dominant over Great Britain in the first half and was able to proceed to the semi-final as they won the match by a margin of two goals. The British team elevated their efforts in the second half but could not make substantial improvements on the scorecard and lost the match.
First goal of the game was scored by Great Britain while their effort was shortly matched by Spain. The British team scored another goal while Spain managed to ascend on the scorecard by notching up two goals and the score remained 3-2 after the first quarter.
The second quarter saw gruelling efforts of Spanish squad that overpowered Great Britain in the second quarter. Spain blocked all goal attempts of the British team and improved their score by three goals while Great Britain failed to increase their score. Subsequently, the score went up to 6-2 after the first half.
The situation reversed in the third quarter, where Great Britain proved their dominance by overpowering Spain. The British team sent a strong message to Spain by achieving three goals in the third round while the Spanish squad gained two goals, making the score 8-5 after round three.
The British team continued their supremacy in final quarter but unfortunately, they were unable to claim victory in the game. They accomplished two goals in the final quarter while Spain managed to improve their score by just one goal.
Despite the fact that Great Britain dominated last two rounds of the game, their effort was still not up to the mark to place them in the victory corner and they lost the match with a 9-7 effort in the 32-minute game.
Anni Espar Llaquet and Lorena Miranda Dorado of Spain were the highest goal scorers of her team as they scored two goals each to embrace victory.
Furthermore, Spain will play their next match against Hungary in the semi-final.
