Spain outshine Romania in preliminary round, Group B: Day two – European Water Polo Championships
Spain’s national squad outshined Romania in their second Men’s water polo game of Group ‘B’ on second day of the 2012 European Water Polo Championships in Eindhoven, Netherlands on Tuesday, January 17 at the Pieter van den Hoogenband Swim Stadium.
After being defeated by Serbia in their first match, the Spanish players geared up their efforts and outperformed the Romanian squad by a margin of two goals. Spain enjoyed an admirable win over Romania with a lead of 12-10 in the four quarter game.
Just after three minutes of the initial round, Romania’s Cosmin Radu took charge over the ball and scored first goal of the match. His effort was traced by Spain’s Albert Espanol, who scored first goal for his team. The second half of first quarter was unimaginable as both teams scored three goals each and the round ended with a score of 4-all.
Both teams continued their invincible efforts in the second quarter and once again they failed to prove their supremacy over each other. Spanish team accomplished three goals in the second round and their effort was levelled out by Romania, which also achieved three goals and the score went to 7-all after halftime.
The third quarter saw Spanish team taking a lead of one goal over Romania. Spain notched up three goals in the third round whereas Romania managed to score two goals only. The score escalated to 10-9 after the third round.
The Spanish players continued their ascendancy in fourth quarter and advanced on the scorecard by two goals. On the other hand, Romania succeeded in achieving just one goal and lost its second match with a difference of two goals.
Blai Mallarach of Spain scored four goals for his teams and surfaced as the highest goal scorer of the match. He was ascribed by the Spanish fans for making a substantial contribution in his team’s victory. Another prominent contribution was made by his team-member, Guillermo Molina, who scored three goals and emerged as the second highest scorer of the match.
In addition, Spain will now play against Germany on Thursday, January 19, in its third water polo bout.
