Spain overwhelm Netherlands for fifth position: Day eleven – European Water Polo Championships
Spanish squad overwhelmed Netherlands in the Women’s classification round for fifth-sixth position on eleventh day of the ongoing 2012 European Water Polo Championships in Eindhoven, Netherlands on Thursday, January 26 at the Pieter van den Hoogenband Swim Stadium.
The Spanish squad experienced the powerful struggle of Netherlands in the four-quarter match, but they managed to prevail over their opponent by a lead of just one point. They enjoyed a remarkable 11-10 win over Netherlands in the 32-minute game.
After a prolonged series of qualification rounds, the European Championships are coming to an end. These championships are the only major water polo event before the 2012 London Olympics and provide a chance to all teams to improve their strategy before the greatest stage of sports.
The arena enjoyed forceful efforts of both teams throughout the tournament. The first quarter saw ruthless efforts of Spanish squad, which tried to overcome Netherlands and occupied three goals. In contrast, the Dutch players also accomplished three goals and the score went up to 3-all after the first round.
The second quarter saw smothering efforts of Netherlands, which overpowered Spain’s two goals effort by notching up three points, making the score 5-6 after the second round.
The tables turned in the third quarter, where Netherlanders augmented their score by adding three goals to their points list. On the contrary, Spanish team went on a rampage in round three and ascended on the scorecard by clinching four goals and the score remained 9-9 after the round.
The fourth quarter was very decisive, where the Dutch team managed to supplement their score by just one goal. On the other hand, Spain secured two goals in the final round and embraced victory by thwarting all struggles of their challenging team to draw the match.
Jennifer Pareja of Spain chipped in four goals for her team and was announced player of the match for playing a crucial role in her team’s success.
In addition, the arena enjoyed scintillating efforts of both teams while Spanish players received a huge round of applause from the audience for earning fifth position in the tournament.
