Spain reduces chances of Malaysia in Qualifiers for London Olympics – Hockey Update
Following that the Spanish hockey team has been included in the list of countries those are going to play the qualifiers for the London Olympics the chances for Malaysia have been reduced to book a berth for the mega games.
The Spanish team was downed by the hands of Belgium by a single goal, 3-2 in the EuroHockey Championship that awarded the latter on a direct ticket of the 2012 London Olympics. On the other hand, Netherlands and Germany also earned tickets along with England
who will host the mega tournament. The victory of the Belgium was quite unexpected, as many critics were not seeing these results at all. However, the Belgians team not only proved their worth but also raised the eyebrows of other teams to take them serious
contender.
In the next phase, a total number of eighteen hockey squads will take part in Olympic qualifiers to win the three places. These line-ups will be divided into three parts with each having six teams. One of the three qualifying tournaments will be organised
in Japan while the remaining two events likely to be held in Belgium and India.
After Belgium succeeded to get a spot in the EuroHockey Championship, the other countries have an opportunity to get a berth in the qualifiers. The Spanish team will be one of the major contenders those could clean sweep in the qualifiers.
National Coach of Malaysia Tai Beng Hai while briefing the media confessed the difficult situation saying that it would not be an easy task for Malaysians to win a spot in the London Olympics. He further stated that there were only three places in the qualifiers
that would increase the intensity of the competitions.
However, he was of the opinion that venue of the qualifiers would really matter on performance. He added, “It all depends very much on where we play the qualifiers. We have always had it tough in previous qualifiers and this will be no different. We just
have to be prepared for whoever stands in our way. For now, we will not think too much about the teams.”
It is vital to mention here that many high-profile teams including South Korea, Japan, China, Spain and Argentina or Canada will be in the race of qualifiers. Therefore the Malaysians will have little chances to get a berth in the London Olympics.
