Spain secures top slot in 2012 CEV Junior Volleyball European Championship – Volleyball news
A European qualifier match of the 2012 CEV Junior Volleyball European Championship - Men took place between Spain as well as Romania on April 15.
The contest was being hosted in a Czech Republic city of Zdar nad Sazavou.
The Spanish side came into the last match of their European qualifier campaign on a high note as they had won all of their previous matches by making a clean sweep over their opponents. The last match of the Spaniards was not any different as they ended
it by making a win in three back to back sets. The Romanian squad could not give much of a competition to Spain and lost each set of the match by quite a margin.
The scoreboard showed the following final set scores: 25-17, 25-10, and 25-19.
The head coach of the Spanish team, Ricardo Maldonado, shared his views on the matter in the following manner, “I congratulate the local people for the great work they have done for this tournament. The match against the hosts of the Czech Republic in front
of 1’500 fans and with a fantastic atmosphere in the sports hall was just great. We are very happy for having booked our pass to the final round of the European Championship, today’s win with Romania was more of a formality.”
On the other hand, the key players of Spain commented on the win by making the following statements, “The quality of our performance was not always ideal but we have improved throughout the tournament.”
The recent win over Romania has enabled Spain to secure the top slot in the tournament. Holding the first position in the rankings has given Spain the honour of moving on to the final round of the European Championship. The championship is scheduled to take
place in August this year with both Denmark as well as Poland playing host to the tournament. The city of Gdynia in Poland will be hosting the matches whereas the city of Randers in Denmark will be welcoming the teams.
The Spanish squad has already earned itself the honour of holding title of being the silver medallists in the 2011 FIVB Youth World tournament.
