Spain sweeps Greece to win top spot in Pool F: Boy’s Youth Volleyball World Championship
Greece and Spain went head to head in a Pool F match of the Boy’s Youth Volleyball World Championship on August 26th. The tournament is currently being held in Bahia Blanca and the city saw Spain make a clean sweep over Greece and earn the top
slot in Pool F.
Even though the Greeks lost three back to back sets, they did not go down without putting up a good fight. The first set of the match started off with a lot of sparks flying between the two sides but by the end of it, the Spanish were ruling the frame. The
second set was the most thrilling contest between the two as no one was sure where the tables would turn until the very end. The loss of the first two sets sapped the energy out of the Greeks early in the third and the match was finally bagged by the Spanish
at the following final set scores: 25-19, 30-28 and 25-19.
The coach of the Spanish team, Ricardo Maldonado, made the following comments at the press conference that was conducted after the match had reached its close: “I'm very happy with the ticket to the next round which was always our objective. I wish the
best to Greece in the next round. In our next matches we will need to play at our highest level.”
On the other hand, the Greek coach, Ioakeim Dimitriadis, shared his views by giving these statements: “Spain did an excellent work during the whole match. Our team made a lot of mistakes during the match especially with our serves.”
The Greeks were leading the opening set at 8-7 but the Spanish were able to reverse the scheme of things by taking the lead at the second technical time out at 16-12. Once they had the lead, Spain did not look back till they had gotten hold of the first
set at 25-19.
Spain had the lead early in the second set and was able to extend it till 16-11. However, the Greeks managed to make the set reach a tie at 18-18 after which an intense competition between the two sides started that ended with a Spanish win at 30-28.
Spain got the lead at the first technical time out at 8-7 and they kept the advantage till 16-10. The Greeks could not significantly challenge the Spanish who were able to win the set at 25-19.
While the Spanish team has been able to score eight points in the second round of pool play, the Greeks have not been able to secure a single victory that has caused them to participate in the 5-8 classification matches in the next round of the tournament.
