Spain under-20 international Rodrigo revealed he was determined to return to Portuguese side Benfica instead of remaining with English Premier League outfit Bolton Wanderers. The Spanish striker joined Bolton on a season long move in the summer of 2010.
Rodrigo made his debut with the Trotters in a Carling Cup clash against Burnley and made his first appearance in the Premier League against Wigan Athletic. He went on to make a http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Total-c40747 of 20 appearances in all competitions and even scored one goal.
Bolton were reportedly interested in extending http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Rodrigo-c31437’s loan stay for another season or sign him on a more permanent basis. However, the player revealed he did not wish to remain at the Reebok Stadium and was looking forward to a return to Benfica.
The young forward revealed he had held talks with http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Jorge-c19120 Jesus, the Benfica coach, who had assured him he could secure a place in the starting XI. While he admitted it would be a challenge, Rodrigo said he would be willing to fight to play regular football
with Benfica.
Rodrigo said while speaking to reporters:
“A return to Bolton on loan has not part of my plans.
My aim is to continue at Benfica because I believe I have the quality to fight for a place in the starting XI.
That battle will be hard because of the level of my team-mates but I have progressed much during the last season.
I have spoken with the coach and I believe that I have a genuine chance to carry on at Benfica.”
Rodrigo made his senior debut with http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Real-c30728 Madrid C in the 2009-2010 season, scoring one goal in four appearances in the domestic league. The same season he moved up to the Real Madrid B team, where he made 18 appearances, scoring 5 goals.
Benfica signed Rodrigo in the summer of 2010 for an undisclosed fee from the La Liga giants on a long-term five year deal. However, Madrid have maintained the option of resigning the player for a fee of €12 million in the next two years if they wish to do
so.
