Spain wins the European qualifying event against Britain in style - Water polo update
The Spanish Women’s Water Polo team has grabbed the European qualifying title with an oustanding score of 14-9 against the British contingent at the Manchester Aquatics Centre on Saturday.
Both teams were equally matched before the start of the match but it was the Spanish women’s water polo team who made a huge impact on the Manchester crowd this weekend on account of their thrilling and versatile performance in the pool.
They started the European qualifying final in stunning fashion and took a 4-2 lead at the end of the first quarter. The Spanish water polo team didn’t stop their attacks on the net for even a second and took a 9-4 lead at the end of the first half of the
match.
Most impressively, their goalkeeper Rosie Morris put on a show and had the best performance of her career against the British women’s water polo team this weekend. She also saved many goals for her team.
In the second half, two on the trot goals from Ciara Gibson Byrne gave immense hope to the Brits. Frankie Snell also chipped in and took the British water polo team closer to their goal.
However, the Spanish team took a 12-8 lead in the last quarter of the European qualifying match. They claimed an emphatic victory over the British by a comprehensive margin of 14-9 in a cracker of a match on Saturday.
Fran Leighton commenting on the victory and stated, “It was an absolutely fantastic performance from the whole team. Everyone worked hard and I think that the experience we got in the Hungarian National League has really showed today.”
She admitted that the squad should be happy about their stunning victory against the British women’s water polo team for the reason that it was the sheer effort of the whole Spanish women at the Manchester Aquatics Centre this weekend that helped them across
the finish line.
She further added, “We weren’t surprised by how they played, we know that they’re a really strong team, but I think we proved out there that we are just as strong, there are just a few things here and there that made the difference.”
After considering the defeat against the Spanish, the British women were not really disappointed by their performance in the European qualifying match yesterday. They will next compete with Ukraine at Manchester.
In the meantime, Leighton said that she is extremely excited that they have got a rematch in the world league. They will definitely head off from here right now and stand optimistic that they can claim another victory.
